On detecting a fire, please carry out the following:
If the fire is in your direct vicinity, you should:
-
Pull the fire alarm handle on the stairwells.
-
Close all doors and windows.
-
Vacate the room and make your way immediately to the tennis court. Do not stop to collect any personal belongings other than medication.
-
Try to inform as many people as possible on your way to the tennis courts.
-
Please inform the security officer on duty where the fire is located.
NOTES:
-
If you believe that you can do so (in terms of safety) please telephone the Security gate house (422-3205) and notify them of a fire. Once you have made contact, please clearly state the location of the fire.
-
When leaving your room use the stairwells only. Do not use elevators.
-
Even if you are not directly affected by the fire, please go to the assembly point in the tennis courts.
-
It is essential that you go directly to the assembly point in the tennis courts where a roll call of the residents will be carried out by security officers. Any delay may hamper the efforts of the fire service.
TROPICAL STORM & HURRICANE ADVICE
What you will need to know and do in the event of severe weather approaching Barbados:

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO BEFORE A STORM OR HURRICANE
if a tropical storm is predicted it is not usually necessary to leave the island.
However, if a hurricane is forecast, it is advisable to leave Barbados, if sufficient notice is given. The airport may be closed when the storm is approaching, and it will remain closed until the government gives the all-clear. Contact the airport or your airline first to establish what their recommendations are.
-
If you are staying on the island, ensure that all your travel documents, valuables and clothing are protected in plastic bags. Fill up all available containers and saucepans in your apartment with water in order to wash hands and flush toilets in the event that the water gets cut off.
-
Turn up the fridge/freezer to the highest setting and only open when absolutely necessary to maintain the coldest temperature for as long as possible.
-
Ensure your mobile phone/ipad/laptop are fully charged.
-
Get towels from the concierge. You may need these to mop up excess water that comes into your apartment through cracks in windows and doors.
-
Remove all furniture from the patio of the apartment and place inside. Move furniture away from glass patio doors.
-
Ensure that you have enough medication to last you several days in the event that public amenities are closed.

Basic items we supply in the apartment:
Candles
Matches
Water Containers
First Aid Kit
Flashlights and Batteries
Manual Can Opener
Toilet Paper
What you will need to purchase before the storm:
-
Additional drinking water.
-
Non-perishable foods and snacks to last you for at least three days and which do not require cooking.
-
Hand sanitiser & mosquito repellent.
-
Cash - ATM machines may not be working after the storm.
-
Extra candles, matches, batteries.
-
Toys, books, games to pass the time especially if you have children.
-
Petrol - If you have a rental car you should ensure it is filled with fuel. Be prepared for long lines at the gas station.
NOTE:
You may be without power for several days, even a week or more if the storm is bad. Supermarkets will be chaotic. So be prepared for long lines!
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE STORM OR HURRICANE
Storms are unpredictable - it is important to be prepared for all eventualities. Once the storm/hurricane is imminent it is normal to have the power cut and in some cases the water supply. This is to minimize damage. The island will be closed down and you should remain indoors.
-
Conserve battery operated flashlights and radio, use sparingly.
-
Be carefeul when using candles, do not leave unattended.
-
If power is lost unplug all appliances to avoid electrical surges when power is restored.
-
If the main living areas of your apartment are damaged by the storm with broken glass, or there is damage to the roof, the safest place for you and your family to sit is in a bathroom with no window.
-
There is normally a lull during the storm. This is the eye of the hurricane and it is not the time to venture outside. The storm winds will return from the other side.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE STORM OR HURRICANE
It is likely that power and water will be out for several hours, even days. Please be patient with this inconvenience. Barbados is a small island with basic infrastructure. We are not geared up to handle severe storms very well. The government and utility companies will do their best to restore services.
-
Ensure doorways and paths are cleared of debris when you go outside. Pay close attention to fallen trees and power lines etc.
-
The management team of glitter bay will provide assistance where needed. The security team will be on hand to help guests if possible.
-
Please note that all public transportation will be suspended, so most staff of Glitter Bay will have trouble coming into work. It may be several days before the full staff can return to work.
-
If the power was cut and then restored, please check all appliances before plugging them back in to ensure they are not damaged.
-
If power is not restored the communal barbecue will be available for guests to heat water and cook food.
-
The storm surge will be powerful. Do not go swimming in the sea. Do not use the pool until the management confirms it has not been contaminated by flood water.
Please follow instructions of the property management team at all times, and please be patient whilst things return to normal. It will be several days before conditions start to improve.
If you are due to return home on flights leaving Barbados in the days immediately after the storm, it is likely that your flight will be delayed or cancelled. This will be due to the airport being closed, or it may be due to a shortage of planes available to depart (if they were not able to come here during the storm). Please contact your airline for information and be prepared to stay in Barbados longer than you had planned to.
